Chapter 13
Mimi sat next to Belle on the couch and listened intently to what had happened. As Belle told the story, Rex paced the room swearing.
“Sweetie, I’m gonna make some tea. Do you want some?” Mimi asked as she rubbed Belle’s back and handed her a tissue.
Belle nodded and gave a tiny smile. “Thanks Meems. I don’t know what I would do without you.”
“Anytime. I’ll be right back.” On her way out of the room she gave Rex a warning look that told him not to say anything that would upset his sister any further.
Rex nodded in understanding and took a seat next to Belle.
“Why don’t you just say it?” She asked as she dabbed the tears under her eyes.
He looked at her in complete confusion. “Say what?”
“That you told me so.” She swallowed a lump in her throat. “You were right about Shawn. You said he would just hurt me again and he did. I was just too stupid to see that.”
“Belle, this isn’t your fault and I would never say that I told you so. Trust me sweetie, this is the last thing I wanted to happen. No matter how much I usually like being right, I didn’t want to be right this time.” He put his arm around her and pulled her into a hug as she once again cried over her aching heart.
Meanwhile in the kitchen Mimi was boiling water for tea and making a call.
“Hello?” Came the voice on the other end.
“Shawn-Douglas Brady you had better have a damn good explanation as to what is going on! Belle is over here in tears because of you. We all trust you to take care of her and this is what happens?! What the hell did you do now?” Mimi hissed into the phone.
“Look, the reason I left was because of Jan. She was pregnant and…”
“She WHAT?! You cheated on Belle?!” Mimi yelped. She then covered her mouth to prevent Belle and Rex from hearing her.
“That’s just it Mimi. I’m not the father.” Shawn began to explain. “On the trip to Puerto Rico Jan was raped. She was going to get an abortion unless I would say I was the father so I did it. I’m not sorry because the result is Daniella Morgan Brady but I’m sorry I hurt Belle. I didn’t mean for this to happen. But Jan is back and thinks we’ll just be this happy little family and I don’t want that. I told her that from the beginning but it’s like she thinks if she tries for long enough I’ll give in.”
Mimi was floored. She was ready to be mad at him but now she couldn’t be. He wasn’t the one who started this, Jan was, but Mimi would deal with her later. “Look, I’m going to help you with this and not tell the rest of the guys what’s going on because as it is, Rex is ready to kill and I don’t think you would stand a snowball’s chance in hell of surviving if the others knew too. Just get over here and explain this to Belle and I mean now. I’ll calm Rex down enough to where you most likely won’t be physically harmed upon arrival but remember, I’m making no promises on that and I have no control over Belle.”
“Thanks Meems. I’ll be there in a hour.” Shawn said before hanging up and preparing to apologize like he never had before.
Mimi poured the hot water into mugs and dropped tea bags into each before taking them to the living room. She handed Belle a cup and then pulled Rex out of the room to explain what was going on. When she told him he still wasn’t too happy but promised there would be no blood shed on the carpet when Shawn arrived. Both returned a few minutes later and tried their hardest to make Belle feel better while they waited for Shawn.
Meanwhile, Shawn was bounding out of the house. He was ready to tell Belle everything. “No more lies Brady. Tell her the truth about everything.” He told himself as he grabbed his car keys. He was prepared to leave but as he opened the door Jan was standing there with Daniella. “Oh for the love of Christ. What do you want?”
“Only one simple thing.” She replied as she ran a finger down his chest.
Shawn shuddered and backed up a little. “Nothing with you is simple Jan. I lied for two years and I refuse to do it anymore. I’m not going to lie to Belle about why I left and I’m sure not going to lie to her about the baby. I’m telling her the truth Jan.” He shoved his way past her, shut the door and headed for the car, with her in hot pursuit.
“Shawn, you can’t do this! You promised me you wouldn’t! You promised you wouldn’t tell that I was raped.” She whined as she trailed him.
Shawn whirled around and gave her an icy stare. “Yes I did and look where it got me. I caused her enough pain to where she almost died. I hurt someone I love that deeply all because of you. The only thing I don’t regret about this whole situation is Daniella. She is the only thing that has made living with you tolerable. Now get it through your head, I don’t love you. I never have and I never will. Now I have to go get my fiancée back.” He climbed into the car, started it up and stared out the window. As much as he hated Jan, he loved that baby. She was his in every way that mattered. She stuck out her tiny, quivering lip and held out her hands to him. He knew he couldn’t let her stay with Jan. He opened the door and took Daniella from Jan’s arms.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” She asked as he took the baby.
“Taking my daughter with me. My name is still on her birth certificate and I’ll be damned if I let you raise her. You’ll be hearing from my uncle regarding my taking full custody.” He explained as he took the car seat from Jan’s car and placed it in his before strapping the baby in.
“You can’t do this!” Jan yelled as Shawn climbed into his car.
“Actually I can and I just did. See you in court Jan.” With that he drove off towards Belle’s house, leaving Jan fuming. He stared into the rearview mirror at the smiling infant. “Ok princess, daddy has a lot of explaining to do with Belle. Are you gonna help me?”
Daniella smiled and gurgled a response.
Shawn smiled. “That’s my girl. Maybe you can help daddy get Belle to understand why I had to leave. After all, you’re the best reason I can think of.” He only hoped once Belle came face to face with the reason, she would feel the same way.
