Driving through town it felt like her heart was on fire. It burned so badly she thought it would never stop. Rex had moved on. Part of her knew she couldn't blame him. Afterall, she had been the one who left. But it looked like he had never thought twice about her.
After she had left she couldn't remember a night without crying herself to sleep for 8 months. Once the twins came they had done enough crying for all three of them. She thought of how hard it had been to care for two newborns by herself and how much she had wished Rex had been there to help. She knew that had she given him a chance he would have been by her side every step of the way.
She turned onto the street her mother lived on and then into a long narrow driveway with a basketball hoop hanging over the garage. She wiped the tears from her eyes, took a long breath and got out of the car. She then went into the process of taking the babies out and grabbing their baby bag. Slightly wobbling from the weight, she made her way up the walkway and to the front door. Placing the babies down on either side of her she rang the doorbell and waited patiently.
"Coming!" came a cheerful voice from inside. A moment later a semi tall, blonde woman appeared at the door. She took one look outside and swung the door open. "Mimi! Oh my baby is home!!" She grabbed her daughter and hugged her tightly. She then looked down at the babies who were looking up and cooing lightly. "Oh Mimi! They're beautiful." She gasped.
"Thanks mom."
"Well bring them inside and let me get aquainted with my grandchildren." She grabbed one of the carriers while Mimi grabbed the other and they headed to the living room. They set each carrier on the floor, removed each child and laid them on the carpet.
"Mom, I'd like you to meet your grandchildren. This is Anthony David." She motioned to the baby in blue that was trying fervently to scoot across the living room but was only managing to go in circles. "And this is Elizabeth Maureen." She pointed to the beautiful baby dressed all in pink who was lying on her tummy, watching her brother's antics with great amazement.
Mimi's mother had tears in her eyes. "Oh sweetie, you named one after me. I'm touched. They're so gorgeous. Do they have nicknames or do they just go by Anthony and Elizabeth?"
"They usually go by Tony and Beth. Mom I'm so sorry I didn't tell you about them sooner."
Maureen picked up Tony and started tickling him. "It's ok sweetie. Are you ok though? You seem upset."
"I saw Rex with his new girlfriend." She replied in barely a whisper.
"Oh baby girl. I'm sorry."
Mimi gazed out the window in the living room. Snow had begun to fall again and it took her back to a year before. "The day I left I had planned on telling him. I had it all planned out. I would tell him and he would get that huge smile on his face, pick me up and twirl me in a circle. Then he would hold me tight, kiss me and tell me how happy he was and that he loved me." Tears once again fell from her emerald eyes. "But before I could tell him Cassie died. I told him I knew he needed me and I would be there for him. He flipped out, told me the only person he needed was his sister and that she was dead. I should have gone after him but instead I ran away. God mom, what have I done?" She sobbed as she thought of all that she had lost.
Maureen placed Tony back on his stomach next to his sister and sat next to Mimi. She held her in her arms and rocked her back and forth as she had done when she was a child. "Shhhhhh..... it'll be ok honey. It'll all be ok." She gently stroked her daughter's head, held her as she cried and silently prayed Mimi would get the one thing she knew she wanted for Christmas.
Meanwhile at the Brady Pub.......
"Damnit Rex! How could you let her walk out that door and not go after her?" Belle yelled at her brother. "Have you lost any common sense you had left?"
He knew she was right but he didn't want to hear her bitching right now. He had enough to think about. "Belle would you just shut up for a minute and let me think!"
Jennifer who was still in shock from Rex's confession regained her voice. "Rex what did you mean when you said those babies are yours? I've never even seen that woman in this town before or those kids so how could they be your's?"
Rex sighed and rubbed his temple. "That was Mimi Lockhart. She lived here up until a year ago when she left. We were together before that for almost a year and that's how I know the twins are mine. That and because the one in blue was almost an exact clone of me." He almost smiled as he thought of that tiny person who looked so much like him and his sister who he wished he had gotten a better look at. "Look I have to go." He pushed past everyone and out the door with Jennifer following close behind.
Once outside she grabbed his arm and he whipped around. "Where are you going?" she demanded.
"I'm going to see Mimi. She and I need to talk. Plus I wanna see my children." He needed to talk to her. To know why she hadn't called or written. Why she hadn't told him that he was a father. And most importantly he needed to know if she still loved him. As mad as he was at her for not telling him about the twins he still loved her. He had never stopped.
"Well Rex what about me?" Jennifer whined as she kept a tight grip on his arm.
He stared at her blankly. "What about you?"
"Well shouldn't I go with you? I mean, I think I should be there to meet them too."
"Jennifer, I don't think it's a good idea. I need to talk to Mimi by myself and I would like to get to know my kids myself first before I have people outside the family meeting them." He couldn't believe how she was acting.
"But Rex..." She whined but was cut off by him.
"Not this time! I'll call you later. Bye." He walked off and left her outside the restaurant.
Jennifer glared at Rex as he walked away. "If Mimi thinks she's taking you away from me Rex she's got another thing coming. If she knows what's good for her she'll stay away." She said to herself as she started to plot a scheme that would ensure she kept Rex until death did them part.
