After a plane trip that felt like it lasted an eternity Shawn, Belle, Mimi and the twins were finally back in Salem. After gathering luggage and loading everything into Belle’s car they headed for the penthouse. Belle took the back roads just in case Jennifer was out and about. They didn’t want to take any chances. They finally arrived at the penthouse and as Belle and Mimi carried the babies, Shawn once again got stuck with luggage duty.
“Ok remind me again how this is fair?” He asked as he hauled the two heavy suitcases and the baby bag into the building.
Belle and Mimi laughed as they watched him struggle through the doors. “Because you’re the guy.” Belle replied as she gave him a pat on the shoulder.
They took the elevator up and once the doors opened Belle quickly went and knocked on the door. It was soon opened by John Black who was grinning from ear to ear as he gathered them all inside. He took the carriers from Belle and Mimi and placed them on the couch. “Doc, the kids are here!” he called. He looked at Mimi. “May I?” he gestured toward the babies.
“Of course.”
He smiled and took the kids out of their seats. Just then Marlena walked in and headed straight for her grandchildren. She took Beth from John and as she stared at her tears blurred her eyes. “Oh Mimi, they’re gorgeous.” She cradled the baby in her arms and gently kissed her forehead.
“That’s a fact.” John added as he let Tony grab onto his finger and shake it. He laughed. “Well he’s got the handshake down. Don’t ya kid?” Tony looked at him and gurgled a reply causing everyone to laugh.
“Thanks for letting me stay here Mr. and Mrs. Black. I really appreciate it.”
John waved his hand. “Think nothing of it Mimi. Anything you need just ask. You’re family.”
“And please call us John and Marlena.” Marlena added.
“Thanks so much. Um, I need to go freshen up. I’ll be right back.” She quickly dashed up the stairs.
When she returned a few minutes later she was stopped dead in her tracks by the man who was now sitting on the floor talking to the twins. “Can you say Dada, Anthony? How about you Elizabeth? Can you say Dada?”
Mimi gave a half smile. “They’re only four months old. I don’t think they’ll start talking for another few months.”
Rex stood up when he saw her. “Hey Mimi. How have you been?”
“Do you want the truth or a sugar coated version of it? Either way it’s not pretty.”
“I’m sorry. I never meant for this to happen. You have to believe me Mimi. I didn’t want to be with her. I don’t even know how I ended up with her.” He prayed she would see that he was telling the truth.
One look in his eyes told her he wasn’t lying. “I believe you Rex. But the question is, how are you gonna prove to the courts that she did something to make you marry her?”
“Shawn and I are going to the station where a lab technician is going to take a blood sample. Hopefully there will still be something left in my system. If not I still have the wine glass and my plate from that night in the kitchen on the counter. I just told Jennifer I’d get around to the dishes later.”
Mimi cringed at the sound of her name. She despised this woman more than anything and hoped that she would soon be in the iron barred hell that she belonged in. “I can’t wait until she’s gone for good. There’s just something that’s not right about her. She’s unstable.”
Rex smirked. “Yea no kidding. The sooner she’s off to the funny farm, the better.”
Mimi looked up at him. Into the face she still loved. “I missed you Rex. Not just when I left with the twins a few days ago but before that. I laid in bed so many nights wondering about you.”
Rex grabbed her and hugged her tightly to his chest. “I missed you too Mimi. I can’t even begin to tell you how much.” He pulled back and held onto her shoulders while he gazed lovingly at her. “I never want to let you go again.”
“You’ll never have to.” Their faces inched closer together. She could feel his warm breath on her face. Their lips were mere centimeters apart. Her heart was beating a mile a minute and the butterflies in her stomach felt like they were doing somersaults. They both closed their eyes and finally, for the first time in over a year, their lips met.
The kiss was soft, sweet and sensual. They were lost in their own little world until an “AHEM!” brought them back to reality.
Both looked up to see a young, blonde woman staring at them….
