He sat in the car for what felt like hours but were actually mere minutes. He was fixing to meet his children and he wasn't ready at all. Most men had nine months to prepare, he had nine minutes. He had stopped by a toy store and picked up toys that he was assured by the sales man to be good for hand eye coordination and stimulating. He took the keys out of the ignition, grabbed the three huge bags and started up the snowy path that led to the door. After he had rang the doorbell he stood there staring at his feet and waiting for someone to answer. He heard the lock snap open but wasn't prepared for what he saw when he looked up.
There she was. Her sandy blonde hair, those beautiful green eyes and by looking at her you would never know she had just given birth to twins. "Hi Mimi. Can we talk?"
She couldn't believe he had come by. She had hoped he would but she didn't dare let herself believe he would. Too stunned to say anything she simply stepped aside to allow him in the house. She then saw the bags he had brought with him. "So, what are those?" She pointed at the large packages.
"I stopped by the toy store and asked the people there for baby toys. Apparently these are the ones that encourage and stimulate them the most." He pulled out two play mats with toys hanging above them, two stuffed frogs that sang nursery rhymes and taught shapes and colors and two ultra-saucers that had toys all around them.
"Thank you. You shouldn't have." Mimi said in a low voice.
Rex glanced at her with a look of resentment mixed with confusement. "Yea, well they are my babies too now aren't they?"
Mimi's heart started to race. She knew this was coming but she didn't want to have this argument now. "Yes they are. Would you like to meet them?"
"Yea, if you don't mind."
Mimi led him to the living room where a playpen sat in the center. Rex stared down at the tiny people in the playpen and for the first time since he had arrived, he smiled. Tears welled in Mimi's eyes as she watched the pride that had overcome Rex. "Their names are Anthony David and Elizabeth Maureen Dimera."
His gaze caught Mimi's and he said something that she could never have expected. "Thank you Mimi. Thank you so much."
"For what?"
"Well for giving them my last name, for naming Anthony after my father but most of all, for them. They're perfect." He watched the twins interact and only wished he had been there from the beginning. He made a silent vow then and there to be the perfect father to them.
"You can hold them if you want. You are their daddy."
He didn't say anything. He picked up the first one he could catch which happened to be Anthony. "Hey there big guy. You are almost a clone of me, you know that? You're gonna be a hit with the ladies I'll give you that much." He kissed the babies cheek and whispered in his ear, "I love you son."
He handed the baby to Mimi and picked up the adorable cherub dressed all in pink. "So you're my little princess. I am never gonna let anyone hurt you. You are gonna be daddy's little girl forever. I love you angel." He gazed at her delicate features. She was definately Mimi's daughter but he could see in her eyes that she had his determination and was probably just as hard headed as he was.
"Mimi, why? Why didn't you call me? Why didn't you tell me about them sooner?"
The questions she dreaded were now having to be answered. She didn't know how to explain it. "I don't know Rex. Part of it was my stupid pride. I guess the other part was that I didn't think you would care."
"How could I not care Mimi? They're my children. I would have been by your side through everything. I would have done so without a second thought and without any regret."
"I know that now Rex but then I didn't. I was gonna tell you about them the night I left but then Cassie died and when I tried to be there for you, you said you didn't need me. I thought it would be best if I just left."
He watched as tears ran over her eyes like water over the falls. He thought back to that night and wished he had never said those things. He would have been there when the twins were born and he would still have Mimi. "I'm sorry. I never meant to hurt you. I know nothing I can say can excuse what I said then so I'm not even going to bother with excuses. I'm just so sorry Mimi."
Mimi placed Anthony back in the playpen and turned to Rex. He had put Elizabeth back in the pen with her brother. They were now only inches apart and were exchanging a look that had been gone between them for so long. "I know you are. I'm sorry that I never told you about them. I should have told you that night instead of running off. I should have called when they were born. I wish I could go back in time."
Rex reached out his hand and grazed Mimi's cheek. "I wish I could go back too. There are so many times I took you for granted and hurt you so badly. I never thought twice about it until you didn't come back. I really did love you Mimi." His heart began to race like it never had before. Then in a tone barely audible he added. "I still do."
A tiny smile lit Mimi's face and she ran her fingers through the back of Rex's hair. "Oh Rex. I still do too."
The gap between them was growing smaller by the second. They could feel each other's breath and hear their hearts pounding as they came closer and closer together.
"BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!" Rex's cell phone started sounding off like a car alarm and both of them jumped back as though they were teenagers who had been caught by a parent. "Rex Dimera." he answered. "Uh huh...... Uh huh..... yea I'll be right there." He hit the end key. "That was my office. I have to go."
"Ok well if you ever wanna stop by to see the kids it's fine with me. Anytime day or night. Just drop by and I'll be here. Just don't make it too late or they won't be up and you wouldn't see them and I wouldn't want you to get mad or be disappointed." Rex put his finger over her mouth to stop her rambling. She always did that when she was nervous.
"Can you go to dinner with me tomorrow night?" He asked hopefully.
"Of course."
He smiled. "Good. I'll see you tomorrow night." He picked up both the twins. " Daddy will see you two later. Be good and don't give your mom too much trouble." He kissed each of their heads and placed them back in their playpen. He then hugged Mimi and kissed her lightly on the cheek. "I'll see you tomorrow night." With that he left the house and left Mimi wondering if maybe, just maybe she would get what she wanted for Christmas. Too bad there was somebody plotting to take it all away from her.
